So...I arrived in Singapore very tired...got into a taxi and gave the guy the address for my halls of residences at the National University of Singapore, namely Prince George's Park Residences aka PGP-ah! SO lucky that as my taxi arrived, Laura, the other student from my pharmacy course at uni (Nottingham, England) who had already been there one day, was just walking past the entrance and took me under her wing from then on and until we got my room sorted!

My room btw, didn't even have a pillow or any bedding....soo glad i took a sleeping bag!! So off we went to the student shop (at 10pm) to get me an ice-cream (sooo hot already!) and a pillow! It was soo humid, the air was soo oily (if that's possible) and I was tired, but SO wide awake...AND i had NO A/C!!! - what a joke!

Our lovely day out started, unfortunately, with rain....but what's a bit of rain in singapore - breaks the humidity (but makes u even more sticky) and keeps you cool! We finally managed to get to the harbour in the changi are of singapore, after anthony was forced to use his mandarin with some old guy, who then gave us directions (until this point, we did not know that anthony could actually speak chinese!!! - and he spoke so quietly and fast and out of the blue that the three of us (laura, franceso and I) were just like....did he just speak chinese??!?!!?!?! lol)

we ran to the boat for cover and started our travelsto ubin.

ubin is a beautifully green island with little in the way of transport and activity. Apparently, this is how singapore was in the 1960s and before its big boom!! We got there and realised there actually wasn't much to do...infact the done thing seemed to be to hire a bike and ride around the island....and so we did - about 1GBP for the whole day's hire! - bargin!! - but also very interesting with the likes of me, who hadn't ridden a bike in, hmmmm, about 5 years, at least!! - but its trur what they say, you never forget to ride i bike! - WELL, not completely, within 5-10 mins i was as good as i ever was, which isn't great to be fair, but it sufficed!

and so, we rode around all day, up and down the hills (well, me n laura didnt exactly RIDE up!), through the forest-y areas, up to a beach-like area...admired the view, laughed and jokes, took some pictures....met a MASSIVE spider!....sat in a tree...attempted to climb a tree (well, anthony did)....drank pure REAL coconut water straight from the coconut shell...visited a buddhist temple and lastly, watched the sunset on the boat journey back to the mainland - or should i say the island of Singapore!

NOW.... the scene from here...THIS epitomises singapore for me!!! - what a skyline!....you look in one direction and you see the tall buildings of the business district, and you look away from that into the horizon, and you see nothing but water. Its so quiet here, all you can hear is water lapping against the coast...you can see evidence of this vast buzzing business-orientated city that is singapore, but hear none of it! - amazing! ....and yes, again, romantic!

ohhh, and there is a hawker centre sooo near by (even though you can't hear the people when you sit on the promenade).....the food is sooooo good! Nothing beats kaya toast (toast with butter and egg/coconut/sugar jam) and kopi ping (iced coffee) whilst looking out over singapore in the dark lights of marina bay and chatting to a couple of mates about everything and nothing!

The Long Bar in the Raffle's hotel is the origin of the legendary Singapore Sling Cocktail. The bar is indeed quite long, is located on the first floor, and its floor is completely covered with peanut shells.

Every table is served with complementary peanuts, bowls of peanuts, which you basically just drop on the floor once you're done with them (the shells, i mean).

The Singapore sling cocktail is definitely the best Singapore sling i've ever had (duh!), and ever since having it here, i've detested all those wannabe fake dont-know-what-a-sinapore-sling-is cocktails all over the world. The Singapore sling as made in the Raffle's Long Bar is red, fruity and potent, so if ever you get some green or yellow sh*t again, ask the waiter to take it back!

We've had lot's of fun with the peanuts, i must say! Peeeeeeenuuuuuut!
