Santiago, Chile - Post 1

We got to Santiago and checked into Aji Hostal (Aji is Spanish for chile pepper) a pun they tend to use for at least 1 hostel in each city. We met up with half a dozen people we had met at the Mendoza hostel and went to dinner in the bohemian neighborhood of Barrio Bellvista about 10 minutes walk away. There we met up with Gemma and Siobhan who we had been on the Rio - Buenos Aires tour with and went on to an Irish bar called Dublin, luckily we were with an native Dubliner (Bryan) who could name all the famous faces on the wall (James Joyce, Patrick Kavanagh (the first one) etc).
Next day we walked half way up Cerro San Cristobal and just sat in the sun for a few hours, after that we just went back to the hostel, before going out for dinner with Siobhan and Gemma for the last time as they were flying to Lima the next morning and we set off for Valparaiso.

Feeling a bit better after getting into arrivals and as a newly solo traveler I decided to be a bit adventurous and take public transport to the city as no one could have a go at me if I ended up in the wrong place. So a combination of bus, metro and a 10 minute walk (return trip costing less than 1/4 of what a one way cab fare would be) got me to my hostel (although I did stand out side it for 5 minutes looking for it on the wrong side of the road). I had decided not to stay in the same hostel as before, mainly because it was one of the worst I had stayed in on my trip so far. The building was a not very inviting grey stone house (not helped by the weather), but inside it was like being in a Scandinavian log cabin. The walls were all pine paneled along with the floor boards, furniture, doors, window frames and staircases, it had just been refurbished and had enough pine in it for a not-so-small forest. The two guys who ran it were very cool and it was very cheap, shame I was only there for one night.
The next morning I tried in vain to watch the 1st Lions on the computers in the common room, having to reload the page every 45 seconds, I think I got the jist of the game. With a few hours to kill before my flight in the evening I ventured outside and took the funicular railway to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. Santiago is infamous for it's smog, and it didn't let me down. 300m above the rest of Santiago the view should have been amazing with the Andes in the distance, instead when I stuck my arm out at full reach it looked fuzzy, and anything more than 10m away was obscured. Still, I walked up to the top of hill from the funicular station and imagined what the view would have been like on a clear day. Also a small display about Pope John Paul II was inside the pedestal of the statue of the Virgen María, from where he gave mass in 1987. After this I went back down to my hostel to pick up my bags and made my way to the airport. At 11pm the plane took off and 7 weeks (to within a couple of hours) in South America was at a close.
Next stop Auckland.

Next day the fog had set in on Valparaíso and visibility was about 100 yards. We went by bus to the neighbouring town on Vina del Mar and saw Chile's premier holiday town in the low season, quite weird, then returned by Metro.
