Last Sunday Sumeet (took a day off) and we went down to the MG road area, to browse and discover.
After some trouble getting a rickshaw (my presence and foreigner-looks seems to make things more difficult here), we got to a lively and busy MG road, with the usual India contrasts - record shops and tailor made suits next to crippled beggars and roadside stalls.
Apart from browsing the shops and dodging the crowds, we did lots of 'market research' and checked quite a few grocery shops for their prices (Sumeet is in that business - trying to be).
Later we checked the '13th floor' which is a restaurant and bar on the ... 13th floor .. of a tall building (can't remember what it was called) in this area here. We snuck into one open part of the terrace and enjoyed the awsome view on Bangalore. Too bad I forgot my camera!! Otherwise I could have shown you all!
Bangalore, from above, is a very green city, I must say (just like Pune actually - but you wouldn't believe it when you're on the road).
Then we walked past this AMAZING cafe - so traditional - check the photos (Taken form my phone - so excuse the bad quality). It goes by the name 'Coffee House'!
Basically it's a litte roadside cafe with some benches and tables and nothign else. The waiters are dressed up in some (I guess) traditional dress with some turban like headcover and uniform.
I was loving it, it just looked so stylish in its shabbyness - but it was original, and quite colonial.
Anybody going to Bangalore around MG road should definitely go there!

expensive costing us 2200 rupees per person.
So we just registered two other guys are visitors to the stall. After
getting in, we discovered that the 1st floor is completely motion less
as fewer start-ups showed up then expected.
So we had to move our stall to the ground floor. Fortunately, got a
good place too. :-)
It was a good day to speak to the audience about Entrip and the travel
blog that we have launched! Most of the audience were techie guys and
media persons. So they seemed to get our points.
They praised the interface, and suggested some feedback that we noted
down. Most of the feedbacks were already being thought by us.
At couple of instances, when Anthony was busy in talking to the VCs and
media persons, and Shardul and Akshay were attending couple of sessions
- I was the only one demoing the product in the stall. So the 1st day was
kinda busy for me!!

HeadStart Compute'09 was the event cum conference cum meeting cum tutorial at Nimhans Convention Center, Bangalore and EnTrip was amongst the top 10 best Indian Startups, so that is how we as a team (first time) became a part of this most talked event on twitter last weekend (9-10 Jan '09).
The day started with setting up our booth..Booth no: 19. EnTrip 2 big posters and one Wordle poster which portrayed everything EnTrip is all about, as eye catching thing for all the visitors. Then within minutes Anthony, EnTrip Director, delivered Demo Pitch after some technical hassle. It was great to hear him second time on stage, first at SIBM Endeavour'08. Day was good, we attended some panel discussions from VC's on how this and coming year will be for startup and how VC's looking forward to invest in the ventures in this global crises. There opinion were as expected, according to them both Company and Investors have to be smart in this scenerio. These panel discussions were indeed great to sleep sometime.
The day ended with discussions, communicating, spreading EnTrip around with soem really good feedback, appreciation.
Other day i.e. on 10'Jan, we were more active the whole day, as number of visitors enhanced. My first interaction was with HeadStart PR, then HP software developers, Yahoo Maps Manager, Intel, Google, Bloggers to name some. It was simply amazing on the communications part and to know how all people think about the product. Our next thing is to reach to more people in coming months with some more functionality.
There were other companies which were amongst the best startups Verismo Networks, SnappyFingers, AlertPedia, CashNext Technologies, Kreeoo, Wolf, Rand De, Mash Labs, Mobisy. It was great interaction for us as a team at Banglore HeadStart !!

Here is what happened:
I got into the government taxi, looking forward to Bangalore. I spent most of the time looking out of the window, shooting the odd photo of some tech buildings and generally enjoying being in a new place.
Billboad adverts advocated that 'Change was in town' and I could have been in any modern city, by the looks of it.
After some initial traffic jams, we were rolling down the streets of Bengaluru at mild 32degrees withuot A/C. It had started to rain but I refused to close my window, because the driver wanted to charge me INR100 for it (having none of that rip-off mentality - I know I could afford it, but wtf, why should I finance and encourage rip-offs and dishonesty). So my arm which was casually hanging out the passenger window was getting pleasantly wet from the rain, which I didn't mind, and the car was getting pleasantly soaked, which the driver did seem to mind (gotha!). After some time he gave in and asked me to close the window, switching the A/C on. Thanks for that.
After about 45mins the driver pulled up to some guy in a neighbourhood that I was convinced was not Sumeet's place, and asked for the way. Ah, the driver has no clue, great. Too bad I didn't either, where was Nick's iPhone when needed for once!
The address was 10th Main Road near 34A cross on 4th T block - yes, in India and in Bangalore especially as I learned today, there is no real causal road naming system. I checked the google map here, and there are at least two 10th main roads, and these roads don't necessarily come in numerical order.
Nevermind, the driver got to some road, found smoe 34A crossing and said, right, that's it. Of course it was no where near where I needed to go, so I told him that I wanted to go to 10th main road.
'Just down that way' said a guy on the street who we asked for the way, and we seemed to get closer. 28th, ... 18th, ... then the driver asked some randomer again, who said 'at the signal, left' (my free translation here). It was CLEARLY labelled 11th Main Road, so I told the driver not to go down it, who in turn asked other randomers for the way ot 34th cross who all confirmed that 10th main must be down 11th main road.
Driving up and down it, we didn't even find a 34A, went in a circle, asked more people, and did this (un)happily for another 30mins. I swear, I have learned my lesson with regards to distrusing random untrusted information the other time I was trying to find beanbags in Pune (readers of my Mahrathi trip might remember), and today was just another one of those days. Too bad the driver had not yet learned that important lesson to not trust random, unverified information - and I doubt he ever will...
So about 15 people within 15minutes told us to go to about 10 different places, including one guy who, as it turns out, we asked just about 100m away from my destination...
After 1.15h in a taxi for 15km, I was getting pissed off, and told the driver that if we didn't arrive within 15min, I'd charge HIM INR50. To strengthen my point, I got out the receipt of the government taxi place and dialed their number, and immediately hung up. Of course he didn't know that and I pretended to be talking to someone, but I did it properly, including faking to repeat myself several times and pronounce 'I WANT TO CHARGE HIM 50 RUPEES' several times - which also made sure he heard it clearly. After a minute fake on the phone, I faked a confirmation from their side with the words 'No, I won't need a receipt, I'll just ask him for a 50Rs discount and it's ok. Thank you', and started counting down the minutes.
Boy, this driver who's been honked at for slow driving did finally speed up! YES, I thought, now I ACTUALLY can tick 'Rip off a rickshaw driver' off my list (ok, taxi driver, same thing), until we got to this one dude who told the driver, that the address must be wrong, since there was no 10th Main Road in 4th T block.
SHITTO I thought, I hope I didn't write down the address incorrectly, because THAT would be embarrassing, and I'd have to apologize to him. So while I had been complaining and counting down the minutes, we reached '4', we suddenly switched roles and it was him complaining about what a waste of time this was. It felt bad, trust me.
But what was that lesson learned above? Don't trust any random information, and after Sumeet called me up to confirm the address and how to (approximately) get there, I was on the upper hand again, complaining about time, while the driver became silent.
Finally we manaegd to get close to the place by chance, after he'd gone down 11th Main for the Nth time, and taking a Right Turn of Fortune. There I saw this restaurant 'La Casa' that Sumeet told me was opposite his place, and I knew I was there.
Siec the driver and me had been in competition to display discontent, I thought I'd use this knowledge only I had to make a final point, and just shouted 'Bas - Enough! Just stop right here, I'd rather walk and find it myself'. ;-)
He did stop, and after I got my stuff, I asked him for my 50Rs. He said, 'No, no, 100Rs' and i said, 'Ok, you give me 100Rs then'. Of course HE wanted the money himself, and after another argument and getting louder and me threatening to get his license taken off him, he zoomed off with literally squeeking tyres and was gone in the rain. Too bad I didn't get a shot of his license plate or the like, but I was, and still am, severely pissed off by these fuckers who just arbitrarily do injustice. It's not about the money, it's just f**king annoying, and I am not willing to just sit back and let it happen.
Either way, I got in safely, after 2h, and am getting hungry!
What a ride!
The travellers of 'Eurotrip 2008' haven't posted anything public here... yet.
