As we drove into a small town we spotted somewhere for dinner. Well, it said "restaurant" on the sign but in the low and blinding late afternoon light we couldn't see that it was actually closed. However, this was not the only thing we didn't see. Nick had driven into what looked like a simple parking lot. It wasn't. This parking lot had a high and low section which we had unintentionally started straddling. As we drove around unable to see properly there was a sudden bang and scraping crunch and the car ground to a halt. We had beached it. By an unbelievable stroke of luck an old baking tray had become stuck between the car and the kerb which we were beached on so saving the car from too much obvious damage as we slid along on the backing tray on our suspension arm. However, we could not reverse out of the situation as the passenger front tyre was not connecting with the road correctly and was just spinning. We tried a few interesting things like manually lifting the car to see if we could solve the problem - didn't work. We decided an engineering solution was required and so went scavenging for wood. We used the car jack to raise the front wheel so unbeaching the car. The idea was to then put wood under the wheel which would effectively raise the lower road surface. However, the way it was beached we never could get the jack high enough and so all our attempts had failed. Then a most excellent thing occured. A local woman, who we never did get the name of, came to our rescue. She very kindly offered to bring her garage mechanic's issue car jack down from her house 3 miles away. This was amazing as we could use this to raise the car much higher and much easier than before. This was done and we wedged a few planks under the tyre and with great care were able to reverse ourselves out of the beaching. A great deal of thanks goes to our mystery helper as we were stuck in a semi-deserted small town in the fading light, in high winds and completely stuck. Without her help we would have been in a royal mess. Before heading off we checked the part we had landed on and concluded that it looked fine. We feel quite lucky for a) getting out of this and b) not wrecking the car which is currently up for sale!

Finally on the road south, we quickly encountered bigger problems than a lack of window switches. Until then, some of the near-city Canadian roads stood out on our trip as harbouring the most dangerous driving. Just after we entered the I15 southbound however, one driver changed that. He drove up so close to the back of the car that the wing mirrors hid almost his entire car from sight. We were doing almost 80, and overtaking slower traffic. Just when I decided it would be a good idea to slow down and pull out of his crazy way, we began overtaking a large truck. A 'small' truck pulled right in front of me and I had to slow to avoid hitting him. The guy behind me was so enraged I had taken this evasive action, slowing him further, that he came up to within 2 meters of our car, still going over 70mph! Graham and I were enraged and shocked. I pulled out of his way but before he sped into the distance, we showed our anger in the standard non verbal fashion: a bad move. Whether or not he saw us do this we are not sure, but for whatever reason, he slowed, joined our lane again, this time in front of us, and slammed on his breaks. When I moved over to go round him, he changed back accross and slowed further, preventing us passing. Now I was actually scared. Was he going to force us to stop, then shoot us?! Luckily, not long after we had moved a second time into the slow lane, he sped away.

Further down the road we found ourselves on the receiving end of more stupidly close tailgating, this time at the hands of a truck. However I managed to keep my cool and drive as safely as possible, and soon we decided that rather than enter Vegas to eat we should stop soon and pick something up before checking into our Motel 6...
