Took a trip to Abel Tasman National Park today, despite the rain. Had the world's most enthusiastic bus driver, a cross between Ned Flanders and Harold from Neighbours we decided. Despite it being 7am he proceeding to narrate his every action, including a u-turn and the location and history of every bit of accommodation we visited along the way. I slept through most of this but luckily I caught the repeat performance on the way back. Took a boat (in the rain) from Kaikori to Torrent Bay, and then trekked back to Marahau. Missed a lot of the scenery in the morning because of the weather but the golden beaches and lush foliage made the trip worthwhile by the time the clouds lifted in the afternoon. Looking forward to my onward trip to the West Coast!

My aunt and Alec have made me extremely welcome here and I have had the complete tour of the city, I think I must have visited most areas by now. I spent New Year's Eve with my cousin Daniel (17) at one of his mate's parties, certainly a somewhat different New Year's compared to what I was expecting but good fun nonetheless. I have been up to visit the Wind Turbine, went to see the Golden Compass at the Penthouse Cinema, and even went to the races on the 2nd Jan. That was definitely a true NZ experience, it felt like a traditional village fete except there were 15,000 people there. The highlight for me was the Grannie Gumboot Throwing competition, which had to be seen to be believed. Commentary was particularly excellent, and I look forward to seeing such an event again.
Last night we checked out some live music at the Civic Centre square which was pretty good, even better for being free. I forget the name of the artist but according to the program he was a mega superstar or something, so I probably should try and find out who he was! Tonight I'm off to watch a football match between Sydney and Wellington, I hear the standard isn't that bad and you can't go wrong for just $20 considering how much football tickets are in the UK these days. I look forward to it!
Right time to head off to get my hair cut, next week I'm off to the South Island! Bye for now.
The travellers of 'Where the hell is Matt?' haven't posted anything public here... yet.
